Macroscopy  Sporophores isolated or gregarious. Cap 30-55 mm diam., convex then plano-convex to spreading, depressed, finally infundibuliform; pileipellis dry, mat, not separable, subpruinous-tomentose, smooth, then rough and sometimes cracked, entirely orange (5-6AB4-5); margin curved to inflexed, rimose, slightly crenelate to cracked. Stipe central, 30-50 × 8-13 mm, straight, cylindrical to fine, dry, subvelvety then smooth, fistulous to cavernous, without ring, entirely white. Hymenophore with lamellae widely spaced (2-4 L+l/cm), decurrent, uneven, relatively thick, brittle, 4-6 mm wide, veined with age, white to cream or yellowish; lamellulae in regular series; edge smooth, concave. Context firm, whitish, unchanging. Odour weak to fruity. Taste mild to sub-bitter. Latex white latex, abundant (fresh), unchanging. Spore print white.

Microscopy – Spores long-ellipsoid to ellipsoid, (9.7-)9.8-11.1-12.3(-12.4) × (7.1-)7.5-8.2-9(-9.1) µm, Q = (1.27-)1.24-1.34-1.44(-1.5), with amyloid ornamentation, composed of a dense and regular network, without warts. Basidia cylindrical to clavate, 50-65 × 9-10 µm, 4-spores. Pleurocystidia abundant, thick-walled (pleurolamprocystidia); pleuropseudocystidia present. Cheilocystidia absent, edge fertile. Pileipellis a lampropalissade. Clamp connections absent.

Ecology – Ectomycorrhizal; open forest, miombo associated with Brachystegia spiciformis, Uapaca kirkiana and U. nitida.

Note – Lactifluus longisporus is fairly easily recognized by its orange cap and totally white stipe. However, confusion is possible with Lactifluus pumilus, an even smaller species with much shorter spores.
