Ecologie  Ectomycorhizien; forêt dense humide associé à Gilbertiodendron dewevrei et Scaphopetalum thonneri, forêt rivulaire associé à Uapaca guineensis.

Macroscopy  Cap 3-6 cm diam., firm, fairly fleshy, regular, slightly depressed to infundibuliform; margin acute, first inflected then irregularly wavy and slightly striated; pileipellis dull, almost smooth, concentric ringed, radially wrinkled, with dark orange-red to brownish-orange [6C8], light brown [6D6-8], dark brown [6F6-8] in the centre, lighter towards the margin, later greyish-orange to reddish [5BC6]. Stipe 3.5-8 x 0.6-1.5 cm, cylindrical, slender, sometimes tapering towards the base, slightly striated longitudinally, light brown to brown in upper part [6DE8], brownish orange to reddish orange in lower part [6C5-6], whitish near the base, firm, solid. Hymenophore with lamellae adnate to subdecurrent, uneven with many lamellulae of different lengths, frequently forked, very dense and very narrow (1-1.5 mm wide), thin, first pale yellow [1A3] to yellowish-white [3A2-3], later orange-white [5A3]; edge entire, concolorous. Flesh firm, white, yellowish to ochraceous under pileipellis, unchanging. Odour fairly strong. Taste very pungent. Latex abundant, white becoming transparent, sometimes greyish to blackish when drying, very pungent. Spore print cream to pale yellowish.

Microscopy  Basidia cylindrical to narrowly clavate, (2-)4-spores, 35-45 x 7-10 m. Pleurocystidia absent. Pleuropseudocystidia abundant, emergent, 4-5(-7) m diam., cylindrical and tortuous. Spores subglobose to ellipsoid, (6.7-)7.5-7.9(-8.8) x (5.0-)6.5-6.6(-7.3) m, Q = (1.06-)1.14-1.15(-1.24); ornamentation amyloid consisting of irregular, isolated or connected warts, -0.5 µm high.
